Artist Statement
Since leaving the east coast 6 years ago, I have had the privilege of living throughout the western United States working with wildlife for various private, state, and federal organizations. I have climbed the Teton mountains of Wyoming researching moose and ticks, hiked through slot canyons in Utah identifying songbirds, and combed the forests of California and Oregon recording sightings and collecting data on the Northern Spotted Owl. When I began painting, I immediately gravitated toward wildlife and landscapes. Painting was a way for me to reflect on the unending wonders of the natural world. It eventually also became a way for me to process a changing world. The experiences through which people develop relationships with nature are as diverse as our artistic means of exploring those connections. Painting and creating imagery allows me to make sense of the myriad of interactions that assemble our perceptions of beauty and worth in the natural world.
